Somalia’s president Sharif Sheik
Ahmed welcomed on Saturday the peace efforts being
conducted by the Hawiye traditional clan elders saying
that they are ready on their side to comply with the
ceasefire call proposed by the elders.
In a press conference held in Mogadishu today
after meeting with the Hawiye clan elders, president
Ahmed talked about several issues including the recent
deadly fighting in the capital saying that Somali
people have no need for another war.
“I believe the both sides that involved in the
fighting did not bring any advantage but caused more
civilian casualty and my demand is to solve the
conflict through peaceful way,” he said.
He also offered peace with the Islamist hardliners
opposing his regime as the religious leaders are
trying to bring an end to conflict between the
government and its rivals.
Ahmed said he met with the clan and religious leaders
and accepted their demand for ceasefire and agreed to
introduce Islamic Sharia in the country.
But the proposal of imposing Islamic Sharia will need
to be endorsed by the extended parliament.
He confirmed that his government has moved to the
capital from the neighboring country of Djibouti that
hosted the UN sponsored peace talks that brought
Sharif Sheik Ahmed as the president of Somalia.
