Somalia: France offers to train 10,000 Somali soldiers

Officials of the European Union have for the first time disclosed their plans to offer training to the Somali government forces that are expected to take charge of security of the country.

The government of France has issued a statement in which it said it will provide support to Somali armed forces in the form of training in order to uplift their combat skills.

France's minister of foreign affairs has said they have the plan ready and have even set aside funds that will be used to carry out the training. He also said they have international trainers ready to train Somali armed forces but additional troops to guarantee the security of these international trainers are required.

We will deploy trainers in Somalia in order to train Somali armed forces that do not have adequate training as soldiers. You can see the situation as it is [in Somalia], there is widespread insecurity in the country, said the minister for foreign affairs in France.

The French minister also cautioned the new Federal Somali Government against not taking advantage of the international good will that it currently enjoys. He said this administration has got the support of the international community and called upon other countries to support this national unity government.

The French Minister also said they will cooperate with the Djibouti government which they have in the past cooperated with in matters pertaining to Somalia. He also said his government will be training 10,000 Somali soldiers. The French Minister had met with President Shaykh Sharif Shaykh Ahmad in Djibouti where the new national unity government was formed.
