Somalia: Al-Shabab imposes curfew in southern town

The Islamic Administration in Bardere, Gedo Region that is controlled by Al-Shabab has last night imposed a curfew on the town. Al-Shabab has said a curfew has been imposed in the town starting 10 p.m. starting last night.

Head of Security of the Al-Shabab administration in Bardere, Farah Hish Muhammad speaking to Waagacusub last night said the curfew is now effective in the town. The Al-Shabab official in Bardere thanked the residents of the town whom he said have been abiding by the rules.

The Shaykh said the reason behind the curfew in the town is to ensure its security since the Islamist group, Al-Shabab, is responsible for the town's security. He also warned that stern measures would be taken against anyone found to be violating the curfew order.

Al-Shabab's head of security in Bardere, Xish Muhammad, also spoke on recent orders issued from their offices banning men and women in the town from using the same public transport vehicles. He said this was part of things that are considered to be inappropriate in Islam and that anyone found to be in violation of this particular order would also be arraigned before the Shariah and punishment that is in line with it prescribed.

Farah also warned the residents against violating their earlier orders in which they had banned the use of Khat in the town saying that like all the other orders, if anyone found to be violating it, they would also be punished according to the Shariah.

The Al-Shabab official also touched on a recent conflict between their group and Ahlu Sunna wal Jama'a forces regarding the celebration of birth of Prophet Muhammad that is mostly celebrated by religious leaders. Al-Shabab has warned that stern measure will also be taken against anyone found to be singing praises of the prophet or celebrating to mark his birthday
