Somalia: president "ready to implement" Islamic law

A delegation of international Muslim scholars last night held a meeting with the new Somali president, Sheikh Sharif Shaykh Ahmad, at the presidential palace.

The delegation was holding meetings with various insurgents groups in Mogadishu recently. The delegation's meeting with the president at his palace [Villa Somalia] lasted for hours.

Sheikh Muhammad Osman, who is a member of the delegation, told Waagacusub after the meeting that they discussed with the president how Islamic shari'ah could be implemented in Somalia, and other issues related to the current situation in the country.

He said that President Sharif told them that the issues are being discussed and that his government was ready to implement them.

"The president told us that they [government] was ready to implement shari'ah in Somalia," said Sheikh Osman.

Responding to a question on whether they had discussed with the president the issue for meditation [between his government and groups opposed to it], Sheikh Muhammad said that the point was among the issues they had raised during the discussions.

He said that during their stay in Mogadishu, they held meeting with some [insurgents] groups and had got appointments to meet other groups today.

"Yes, we discussed the issue. We also are involved in the mediation and we shall brief the media after we succeed, God willing," added Osman.

The delegation of international Muslim scholars, who arrived in Mogadishu a few days ago, held separate meetings with Somali religious organizations, Islamic-partyand other groups. It is unclear how the group in Somalia which are currently divided politically could come closer.
