Fighting erupted Somalia capital Mogadishu on Sunday
between the rebel Islamist group and government troops
with the AU peacekeepers – it is the first since the
moderate leader was elected as president by the parliament
last week.
Witnesses told Waagacusub Media that the war happened
around former Siad Academy building in Hodan neighborhood
where it is based by the Burundian troops of African
Union peacekeepers backing the transitional federal
government.
The latest combat came when the Islamic militants attacked
bases of the government and AU troops where they have
exchanged heavy artillery weapons which could be heard
through out the city.
There is no immediate casualty as sporadic gunfire
could be heard.
This follows yesterday’s mortar attack on the presidential
house hours after the arrival of country’s new leader.
As published on the Islamist internet page, the Al-Qaeda
linked group of Al-Shabab claimed the responsibility
of the mortars fired at president’s residence.
The Somali government troops and AU peacekeepers did
not respond to the attack as ordered by the president.
